More Counting Ideas from Ms Callan/Ms Gilchrist

Counting can be done anywhere !  More counting ideas!

                      Card Game: 21

Another really fun card game to play with your family.

Firstly take a look at the cards in a pack. Most have numbers on them but some have a king, a queen or a jack on them.

The aim of this game is to count your cards and try to get as close to 21 as you can without going over 21. If this happens you are 'bust' and out unfortunately!

1.The dealer gives every player two cards each. All players must add up their cards. For example a 6 and a 9 makes 15.
A king, queen and a jack are worth 10 ans an ace can be 1 or 11. If it is simplier you can make a jack always worth 1.

2. The dealer goes to each player one at a time until they do not want anymore cards. They decide to 'stick'. When each player has gotten their cards the person closest to 21 is the WINNER.

This game is excellent for children's mental addition!!!

Watch this quick video of my children and I playing. We often play with coins or matchsticks to add some extra fun ;)

Number fun!  with Ms Callan/Ms Gilchrist

Fun card games to play at home

Playing Cards - House!

Picture
So the first game you can try is a game called House. The game can be played with 8 cards. We used to try shape our cards like a house as children and that is why we called it ‘House’. My own children tell me it is nothing like a house of course! For Junior and Senior infants it is probably best to start with 3 - 6 cards. Give each player their cards.

Step 1

Picture
PIcture 1
The players turn over their cards so they are face up. It is important to check they know the number on each card. You can gradually introduce the picture cards (Jack, Queen, King). Explain that the ace card is the 1 but is called 'ace' in cards. Once all are ready the game can start.

Step 2

Picture
Picture 2
One person is the caller and must call out the leftover cards. They do not play house they are just the caller.

Step 3

Picture
Picture 3
Players must turn over any card they have called by the dealer.

Step 4

Picture 4
If you have two of the same card called out you can turn over both

Finally!

The person with all their cards turned over must shout 'House' to win.
Here is a short video of my children enjoying a game. The video shows how simple it is to play. Have fun!

Hi OLV kids!!! (and Mums and Dads), Ms. Stanley here!!

I hope all of you are doing well during these unusual school days. I am sure you have been enjoying the teacher activities you have been sent and are all trying your very best in these unusual circumstances (this includes you Mams and Dads).

I am staying at home myself with my 2 children and we are trying to keep busy with baking, time in the garden, reading books, playing Lego and of course some school work!

I miss bringing all my many Maths activities to your classroom on daily basis. But I HAVE been doing some Maths games at home with my own daughter who is 6, like many of you are!!!
She has helped me make some little videos for you of some Maths games that can be played at home.  My daughter is in Senior Infants so these activities are suitable for Senior infant children and they are a lot of fun!

If Mams and Dads could print the games for you (if not, don’t worry, that’s ok!) maybe you could have a try! I have tried to use items you may have around the house to make things a little easier.

Let me know if you enjoy them!
Check back soon as I will post more activities as soon as I have tried them out myself at home.
Stay home and stay safe!
Ms. Stanley.
