In January the children worked on two large scale collaborative drawing projects. The first was an arctic scene which was later used for small world play. The second was a landscape drawing of the view from our classroom window.
This week is Science Week and the children have been having a great time conducting their own classroom experiments. Ask the children to tell you about the Dancing Raisins or the Jumping Rice or even their String Telephones. Tomorrow we will be making rockets blast off to end Science Week with a bang!
Multi-sensory number work. Here the children are using numicon with partners to figure out the many ways we can represent the number six. The children did a great job recording their findings in number sentences on whiteboards.
The children began to learn about the process of printmaking this month. We looked at commercial stamps and discussed how we could go about creating our own stamps. The children searched the classroom for materials to use to make prints. Some objects were more successful than others.
Every morning the children start their day with table top activities. These include jigsaws, puzzles, matching games, number work, pattern activities etc. This is a great time for children to settle into the day, practice literacy and numeracy skills and also catch up with their friends.
Our Story of the Month for October was Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. We had great fun creating recipes for magic potions and playing as witches and wizards in our Aistear Role-Play area. Here are some pictures from when Winnie the Witch stopped by for a surprise visit. She demonstrated how to make an explosive potion!
