Hello parents/carers and students,

I hope you had a peaceful weekend and are keeping well. Please leave a comment if you haven't already, so I know who has access to this. It will be helpful when planning future posts.

Thank you to all the children who have completed work so far, and to the adults for helping them. I imagine it is getting trickier to encourage school routines as the weeks go by. With that in mind, I will continue to post activities but there is no pressure to do it. As per previous posts, it is suggested work only. Activities can be done daily, every few days, or over the course of a few weeks. Please do it at a pace that suits the child's ability. Remember that a blank page can often replace the need for a printer.

I came across the below poem recently. Seems like a hopeful poem for all ages, and a nice one to read to your children.
**** I intend to post a video of me saying hi to students over the coming week (If my internet connection permits me!).

Best Wishes,
Ms.Dolan xx

Science and Procedural Writing:

How To Grow a Sunflower

Every year, different classes in OLV Infants get the opportunity to plant sunflower seeds and then care for them. Check out the video I made on the steps involved. This is called a procedure.
We have practised procedural writing during the school year, so I would like you to try it on the attached writing frames (or on a blank page). After watching the video, say what you can remember to an adult. This will help to improve your oral language.

Maths:
1. Correct Number Formation
2. Counting by Twos
3. Counting forwards/backwards

As you know, correct number formation is important. Lots of practice will help with number reversals- I have attached worksheets (numbers 1-20). We also learned to count by twos up to 20 (worksheets attached).
Check out the videos below that you like to sing-along to in class. Also included is counting to 100- Room.8 enjoy a challenge. They have really improved on their counting skills this term. Well done!

Keep up counting by twos and counting forwards/backwards between 0-20. When you know that, try higher numbers.
Practise counting forwards/backwards from different numbers, e.g. count on from 6-12, 3-16, 9-20, count back from 18-4, 15-2, 11-1.

Tricky Words,
Reading and
Dictation

Good morning!

Can you remember all the tricky words you have practised since starting Senior Infants? There were lots! That is why we must keep practising. Knowing tricky words also helps to improve reading.

Remember that tricky words are made up of regular and irregular parts. They cannot be sounded out easily. Often they cannot be spelt accurately by listening for the sounds. As a result, they have to be learnt.

**Please use the attached 'Handy Tricky Word List' to guide you in the coming weeks:
  1. Start reading Red Level in Week 1. and continue with a new level each week. You can practise more than one level per week too. Read to an adult.
  2. Dictation: An adult calls out the words (in no particular order) and the student writes them down.
  3. Write a sentence for each tricky word as you move through the lists.
  4. Challenge: Write 5 extra sentences after revision of each list. Include two/three tricky words in each sentence. Can be from any list.

Parents/carers
There is no time limit on these tasks. Please start on whichever day suits you. Words get harder as each list progresses, so focus on red and yellow levels only if the whole page is too difficult.

Maths:
The Story of Numbers

Hi Room.8,
Hope you also had a nice day of sunshine and blue skies......wherever you are!
You have heard teacher talk about the importance of number bonds or the 'Story of' a certain number. Another way to describe it is when you add two numbers together (or a pair of numbers), to make a given number. Some examples in the Story of 6 are: 0+6=6, 2+4=6 and 3+3=6

________________________________________________________________________
We have done the Story of 6, 7 and 8 already. The final numbers are 9 and 10.
I would like you to revise 6, 7 and 8 before doing 9 and 10. I have attached two sheets for each story, e.g. two for 6, two for 7 and etcetera. These are called 'Rainbow to' worksheets.

Start with the Story of 6. Do one story per day.
I have attached downloadable versions below. You can handwrite and copy the empty version onto a page from the screen, if you don't have access to a printer. Please try to fill out the answer sheet without looking at the full sheet. Have fun :)

Best Wishes

Dear parents/ carers and students,

I hope you are getting a chance to enjoy the sunshine in a safe and relaxing way. I miss seeing all the friendly and talented children of Room.8! They are a credit to their families.

Also hope you are doing okay under the current circumstances, where every household has increasing challenges. Undoubtedly, you did not envisage your home becoming a daily type of mini-school! I am here to help, so please do not hesitate to contact me via the comments section. Due to GDPR considerations, parents are now being asked to communicate with teachers mainly through the comments section.
If you have any concerns, please contact management via the official e-mail address: [email protected]

Due to my current living arrangements, access to a slow internet connection has been an obstacle in posting. However.... it has improved :)

I will continue to post suggested work, along with some websites for distance learning. Nevertheless, there is no pressure on students to view or complete same. Obviously it will help to maintain a sense of routine, revise previous work and continue new learning. If a student is able to participate in a suggested topic, the timeframe for completion is at parental discretion. I appreciate that everyone is busy, and teachers are grateful to parents/carers for facilitating any type of distance learning.

**********************************************************************************
Please ask children to take a look at the following blog posts (with adult supervision): Spot the difference, The Dental Surgery and The Veterinary Clinic.
There are activities to complete in each area.
**********************************************************************************
THERE ARE NEW PHOTOS SHOWING CHILDREN'S HARD WORK THROUGHOUT THE YEAR... PLEASE TAKE A LOOK! YOU CAN COMMENT BY CLICKING THE 'COMMENTS' BUTTON.

Bye for now,

The Veterinary Clinic

Our Aistear theme for March is the Veterinary Clinic. Everyone had so much fun on our last day of school in it. A great variety of animals were looked after.......long, short, big, small, patterned, multi-coloured, four-legged, two legged, no legs!!!
The clinic staff were patient, kind and worked well as a team. Customers were so friendly too!
Children also created nice Playdoh animals and a 3D veterinary clinic. Super effort everyone!

Activities
Can also post some of your answers on here.

1. Count the different types of animals you can see in the pictures.

2. Write a list of the animals.

3. Describe the animal in 3-7 written sentences, depending on writing ability.
Remember capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
Examples: The tiger is part of the cat family. It has four legs. His/her teeth are sharp. His fur colour is black and orange. It is like a pattern. He can run fast. They grow to a big size.

4. Can you find or think of some long/short things? Check out the VERY LONG customer in picture. 5! Look around your house, compare, discuss with an adult.

5. Talk about your favourite animal. Why is it your favourite?

6. Can you find money at home that adds up to the following items in picture 24?
  • cat food (5c)
  • dog collar (10c)
  • dog food (50c)

Can you spot the difference?

During December, we read Stickman, by Julia Donaldson. Then we tried to recreate the front cover picture. Lots of glitter and fun! Well done to everyone.

1. Spot the differences:
  • Between pictures 1 and 2
  • Between pictures 3 and 4
  • Between pictures 5 and 6

Write your answers on a piece of paper, tell an adult, or post under the comments section. Try to pick something different from other posters. Remember to ask an adult for help!

2. Practise writing from 1-20 forwards and backwards on paper (or a mini-whiteboard if you have it). Watch out for reversals!

Challenge: Write to 50, or keep going to 100.

The Dental Surgery
(December 2019)

Our Aistear theme this month was 'The Dental Surgery'. This also coincided with the teaching of the Mighty Mouth Schools Programme, part of the SPHE Infant curriculum. It focuses on the importance of good oral health for children.
The clinic became very busy during Aistear hours, but I think the staff did a super job!
Please check out our pictures below. Click on the comments button (above) if you wish to contribute.

Activities
Discuss the following with an adult. Remember that discussions will help to improve your oral language.

  • How many times a day should you brush your teeth at least?
  • Why is it important to brush your teeth regularly?
  • How do you brush your teeth correctly?
  • What are the two healthiest drinks for your teeth?
  • What are the least healthiest types of food/drink for your teeth?
  • Name 5 healthy foods.
