Tricky Words

Let's revise the tricky words we have done and look at the next 4:
  • to
  • do
  • are
  • all
If you can try and make your own flashcards at home and practice them :)

Setting

The character is the 'who' in the story.

The setting is the 'where' and 'when' in the story.

Let's have a look at some examples of different settings. Can you think of some of your own?
Draw a picture of a setting! Add some labels (try for three) and try a sentence if you like. Have a look at mine below.
Draw a setting:
  • Step 1: choose a setting and draw it (pick anywhere you like)
  • Step 2: label your drawing (add some sounds or a whole word if you can)
  • Step 3: Add some colour!

Read Aloud

We have done a lot of work this morning! Well done!
Have a little relax and enjoy the following story :)

The Snail and the Whale
by Julia Donaldson, one of my favourite authors

Maths

Let's practice all of the numbers we have done so far 1-5.
* Get your whiteboards and pens ready!
We are going to:
  • Write the numbers
  • Draw sets of each number
  • Draw something fun yourself

Word Practice

Dictation

Those brains should be all warmed up so we're going to do some dictation.
* Have your whiteboard ready with numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
* Listen to the sounds and write what you hear (by yourself)

Read Aloud

We were learning all about clothes (eadaí) last week in our Gaeilge lessons. Have a listen to the story below The Smartest Giant in Town and see if you can identify all the pieces of clothes in English and as Gaeilge if you can too!
George is such a kind giant! He practices all of our kindness rules that we have in OLV. I hope that we are remembering to be kind at home with:
Kind Hands
Kind Feet
Kind Words and
Kind Hearts
If you would like to you could draw a picture of George or you could draw a picture of you doing something kind at home!

* Watch the video below. Practice on whiteboards, and in handwriting copy
** If you have the facility to print you could print the following pages and give them a go.
***If you are not able to print. You (Mammy/ Daddy/ minder) could draw out a big rainbow letter on one side and you could practice your pencil work on the back.
I added links to these pictures below if you would like to download. Let me know if they don't work.

Welcome to Week 3

I hope you all had a lovely weekend and are ready to get stuck back into some work!

PE

We love dancing in Room 1! It's great to start the day with a little bit of movement, if you can, to get those brain muscles all ready to learn!
Also if you don't have the ability to get out and get some fresh air, these videos are a great alternative to get some exercise squeezed in.
And a more relaxing one to calm down the body and mind.

Our News

It's that time again. Tell me all about what you did at the weekend.
You can:
  • Draw a picture (don't forget the labels)
  • Record yourself telling me your news
  • or both :)

My News

Word Practice

Practice reading some words and writing some words.

Maths

Today in Maths we are going to do:
  • counting
  • number formation practice
  • ordering numbers and making sets

Can you write out the numbers 1-5 on a piece of paper and cut them out. We are going to use them to order. Also get a collection of random toys or things around the house.

Gaeilge - Na Dathanna

We are going to look at the colours as Gaeilge. We know the first few colours but the rest of the words are new. So you can replay this video again during the week to become familiar with the words.

Good morning, and happy Friday!
To tie in with our theme of occupations we're going to have a look at the book Farmer Duck. Enjoy the video below.

Farmer Duck

Character

Let's have a quick look at some of the different characters you could have in a story.

Draw your own character

You can draw someone from the story or think of your own character. Have some fun with it. Don't forget to try and add three labels.
* Here's some ideas of characters below or anyone from our occupations would be a character too.
Picture

Phonics Practice

We have done loads of practice this week. So you don't need to do this today (or at all), but I know some of the class really love their sounds. If you want a little extra practice before the weekend have a look below!

Maths

It's Friday! We try to do extra fun things on Friday in school. So today for our maths warm up I have linked a video of number blocks! This is one of our favourite things to watch in school when we're stuck in at break time!

*It's quite long so don't need to watch all of it. Nice counting at beginning of the video.

Money - Shop

Set yourself up a very simple shop. You can sell anything: toys, books or cutlery (anything you can find around the house) . Price the items from around 1c to 6c. Go to the shop and buy some things. Can you make the correct amount?

Gaeilge

Eadaí:
We are going to over some of the new words and then look at a little story of Teidí wearing different clothes. Can you repeat the phrases?

Have a lovely weekend! I'll see you all next week :)

Writing Practice

* Get your whiteboard and sound out these words

Reading Practice

* Sound out the words in the video

Tricky Words

* Have a look at the next 4 tricky words
  • me
  • we
  • be
  • was
Remember they're tricky! We can't sound them out!

Handwriting

Let's do our new letter r!
* Get out your whiteboard and worksheet to practice

Maths

We always try to start our maths with a little bit of counting. To give you a break from looking at me. Have a little look at the counting videos below and join in with the counting. Make sure you say each number clearly!

Money

We are looking at money again today. We are still working with 1c and 2c today. We are going to try and make some bigger numbers using just these coins.

* Remember 1c gets 1 tap and 2c gets 2 taps
2c = 1c + 1c
Sorry that video ended up being much longer than expected.

Try it yourself

You will need:
  • A sheet or whiteboard
  • some 1c and 2c coins
* If you use your whiteboard you can rub out the amounts and try a different number.
Picture

Gaeilge - Eadaí

What are you wearing?
  • Tá _____ orm.
I can't get any of our Bua na Cainte videos online. But I found this video as gaeilge below and thought it might be nice to finish off the day watching a few minutes of something. It talks about the different animals. We already know most of them.

Note to parents:
  • We will be doing lots of work on plain pieces of paper. If you don't have paper at home or it's getting very messy keeping everything together feel free to use a blank copy for any of the work or the whiteboards if necessary.
  • This work is to help your child stay up to date with the curriculum and keep in touch with others in the class, it's not meant to add any extra stress at an already stressful time.
  • So please complete work whenever it suits you and your family or feel free to pick and choose what suits your child's needs
  • That being said I really appreciate the engagement and support from all the parents and children at home, and I am loving seeing the work completed :)

Literacy

  • Writing practice (sounding out)
  • Reading practice
* Have your whiteboard and pen ready

English/SESE

Our topic this month is occupations (jobs). We are going to have a look at some of the different jobs that people do!

* Have a little listen to the video below can you say the names of the jobs. Can you tell someone else what that person does in their job?
e.g. a fireman puts out fires

Occupations

The next video we are looking at some flashcards. We are looking at 3 things:
  • Who are they? (I am a doctor.)
  • Where do they work (I work in a hospital.)
  • What do they do? (I help sick people.)
*If you are practicing at home try to have full sentences not just one word answers.

Draw me a picture!

What do you want to be when you grow up?

There are lots of different jobs that people can do. Have a little think about what job you would like to have when you grow up. Can you draw a picture of it?
* Remember: try to add some labels to your drawing when you are finished

Maths

We are looking at number patterns again. Get your whiteboard ready! I'm going to show you a pattern, can you try and draw it and write the number.

* Have your whiteboard ready!

Money

Get some of your coins ready, we are going to be looking at making different amounts today.

You need:
  • 1c and 2c coins
  • The following sheet made on paper or whiteboard
Picture

Finding counting tricky?
* Remember 1c gets one tap and 2c gets 2 taps
Also remember this is new so just try your best :)

Gaeilge

Say hello to my new friend Teidí.
  • Dia duit Teidí

Eadaí

Have a look back at the video from yesterday for Eadaí to have a practice of our new words first.

Handwriting

Good morning boys and girls! Today we are going to start with some handwriting. Our new letter is 'p'.

Take out the following:
  • whiteboard
  • whiteboard pen
  • p worksheet
  • pencil
Now have a go of your rainbow letter! How colourful can you make it?
- Can you remember the word from yesterday for rainbow as Gaeilge? (tuar ceatha!)

You can practice your p on your whiteboard, on the practice sheets and in your grey homework handwriting copy. These don't all have to be done today. You could pick one each day to have a go of so that your child doesn't get too tired and they get to practice the new letter on different days.

Tricky Words

We are starting with our blue tricky words. These words are trying to trick us and don't follow the rules of our phonics so we say the names of the letters rather than the sounds.
We are looking at the first four tricky words today:
  • I
  • the
  • he
  • she
Take a look at one of the red readers in your child's homework folder. The tricky words will be on either the inside cover or the back cover. When you are doing your reading this is a great opportunity to have a little practice as well.

Readers

Can you help me read this book? You might have this one at home or you might have a different one.

Dictation

We are going to do something called dictation. I am going to call out 4 words and I want you to write down what you hear. This is an activity to do by yourself without any help from any adults. Just try your best and write down the sounds that you hear, don't worry about making mistakes.

Make the following on a sheet of paper or the whiteboard.
Picture

Counting

How good are your listening ears? I'm going to drop some coins in the tin can you close your eyes and count each drop? Let's give it a go.

Combinations of 5

You will need to make the following sheet on a blank piece of paper. You will also need: whiteboard, pen and some type of counters or toys (5 of them).

Picture
We are going to find all the ways to make the number 5 and then write our number sentences.

Number Formation Practice

Take out your number 4 worksheet and give it a go. Don't forget to keep practicing numbers 1-3 as well. :)

Gaeilge - Eadai

We are going to look at some new words. Have a little look at the video below and repeat the words:
  • geansaí
  • léine
  • bróga
  • hata
  • bríste
  • stocaí
  • cóta
  • gúna
They don't need to be able to read the words I just thought I'd put them up for any parents watching.

Phonics

We are going to start off practicing some sounds! Have a look at the video below, and if you want to practice again yourself you should all have your pack of coloured sounds in your homework folders.

PE

We usually start our Monday mornings with PE. Instead of watching me jumping around in a video I thought I would share some fitness related links that the children might enjoy.

Our News

I love hearing about what everyone did at the weekend on a Monday morning. We draw our news into Our News copy every Monday morning and then share with our friends.

My News

This weekend I baked some cakes, I took the dogs for a walk and I did some yoga in the sunshine!
What did you do? Can you draw a picture of your news? Remember to try and add at least 3 labels (words). If you like you can get someone to record you telling me about your news picture, send me the video I would love to see it.
Picture
Adding labels and a sentence. Try add your own labels. Don't worry about spelling, just sound it out yourself and write what you hear. It doesn't have to be perfect just try your best.

Maths - Money

This week we will be looking at money in some of our maths lessons. Have a little search around the house and see if you can find any 1c, 2c, and 5c coins....so all of the copper coins that people usually don't want. We are going to have a little fun with them this week.
  • if you don't have them, keep an eye out for some during the week and come back and do the activities later

Introduction

Can you answer these questions?
  • Where do you get money? Where do Mammys and Daddys get money?
  • What do you use money for? Why do we need it?
  • What does it look like? Explore a coin and notice the details.
  • What colour are the coins in the video?
  • What 3 values of coin are copper?
  • Are there any 3c or 4c coins?
Can you have a look at the coins you have found and become investigators! can you spot the differences between them. Can you sort them and the order them? Which set is your biggest/ smallest? Can you sort another way?
Let's have some fun!
Get a scrap of paper, some coins and some crayons!
We're going to make some coin rubbings!

Picture

Look at the Back!

All of the coins have a special design on the back depending on what country they are from. Investigators get ready!! Turn over your coins and see if you can find any coins with different pictures on the back!
