We are investigating autumn in room 14 this month! Thank you for everyone who contributed to our autumn nature table. We went on an autumn hunt, ticking off on our clipboards any signs of autumn that we found. We found red, yellow, orange and brown leaves. We also found helicopters, chestnuts and acorns. We read several autumn stories, such as "The Wide Awake Hedgehog" and "Rusty the Squirrel". We learned that hedgehogs hibernate and we created hedgehogs in art. We are using some of our new autumn vocabulary when we are playing games during Aistear. At the writing/creative station we cut/coloured/drew autumn pictures and made leaf rubbings. We even saw two grey squirrels outside of our classroom window!! It was very exciting.
We learned a lot of information about pumpkins last week! First we looked at the parts of the pumpkin life cycle. We cut out the parts and sequenced them during morning work. We read two books- "It's Pumpkin Time!" and "How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?". On Friday, we examined a pumpkin in class. We came up with words to describe the outside and the inside of a pumpkin. We learned that an estimate is a smart guess. We estimated how many lines/seeds were in our pumpkin. There were 307 seeds inside our pumpkin! Then we came up with ideas on how we should carve our pumpkin.
We also had an art lesson based on pumpkins. We drew pumpkins and we experimented with paint mixing. We discovered that when you mix red and yellow paint you can make orange paint. Make sure to check out our fantastic work on the corridor next week!
The Sam Maguire visited the school today and the infant classes went to see the cup in the hall. Well done to the both the men's and the ladies' GAA football teams on their All-Ireland wins! The boys and girls in room 14 are busy learning all about fire safety this week! We have learnt about why we practice fire drills, who helps in the event of a fire and what to do if we hear a fire alarm. We are using our new fire safety vocabulary during playtime too! We have a small world area with a town and fire engines, a role-play area of a fire station, a writing area where we colour/draw about fire safety and a construction area where we make buildings/fire engines. We have also read lots of books about firefighters and the jobs in a fire station. Ask us about fire safety at home! |
