Hi everyone! Welcome to Room 17! It's been a busy year so far so here's a little look at some of the things that we've been doing.
We've been on a few excursions! At the beginning of the year we visited the Botanic gardens to have a look at the statues. Last week we had our first Winter walk. We wrapped up tightly and went for a walk in the local park. Thanks to all for the fundraising it was a very enjoyable day!
The class love art! They are a very creative bunch. Anything to do with drawing, painting or creating things and this class are interested. There are lots of great imaginations which make for some beautiful pictures. Here are a few pictures of the class painting.
Thursdays are very exciting days because we get to do GAA with coach Gerry. The class absolutely love having GAA and their skills are improving throughout the weeks.
And just to finish off! Have a look at the concentration and enjoyment from one of the exercises used in the warm up.
Hi everyone! I'm so sorry that I haven't posted in ages. I will try to post more frequently for the last term. I have lots of photos and videos from the last few months so I will try and get up as much as possible so you can see some of the things that we have been doing in the class. I hope you enjoy :)
Happy Paddy's Day!!!
We had some Irish dancers in our class. Here is a short snippet of the dance that they performed for us at the parade. They were fantastic!
I'm a Little Leprechaun! The children performed the song in the hall at the parade for the rest of the school. They did so well we decided to do it again to show to everyone at home. Hope you enjoy.
We took a walk around the school grounds to explore the different plants and animals that we could see. We found daffodils, snowdrops and muscari planted around the school grounds. We also visited the pond and spotted some frogspawn. We will be back again in the next few weeks to see the frogspawn develop.
Here is one of the Maths activities that we have done. This activity allows the children to practice many different skills that we have been working on. They have to order the numbers correctly, count out the correct amount of items for that number and match the items to the numbers correctly. This activity was active and lots of fun.
In February, we explored the theme of transport. We learned all about the different types of vehicles and what we use them for. In the pictures below you can see the children constructing their own vehicles using mobilo, taking journeys on the play mat, using play doh to create different vehicles and painting the carriages for our train. We changed the clothes shop into the train station for this month. The children loved pretending to be the different people: customers, ticket sellers, train conductor and train driver.
The Clothes Shop
In January we explored the themes of winter and the clothes shop. In the photos below you can see the children exploring the effects of water on different materials, playing in the clothes shop, playing in the winter small world, drawing winter pictures using pastels and creating outfits. The clothes shop was a huge hit. The children got so much enjoyment in this area. Thank you to everyone for bringing in old clothes to supply the shop, it made a big difference.
December was a very busy month in school getting ready for Christmas and practicing for our play. Here's a little look back on some of the things that we did.
We had a quick visit from the Sam Maguire cup!
A few pictures of everyone looking fantastic in their costumes from the day of our Christmas play.
And a little performance on the last day of term of our favourite song from the Christmas play "Here Comes Santa Claus". I hope you enjoy. Looking forward to seeing everyone after the break.
You may have been wondering what exactly the art was that the children created last week. We began by looking at a piece of work called 'Fall' by Bridget Riley. The children looked at the picture and we discussed what it reminded us of: waterfall, river, waves and hair were only some of the suggestions from the class. It is amazing what you can create just with simple lines.
The class then created their own version and explored using chalk and black paper to come up with their masterpieces.
Hi everyone! I know Halloween is long over but I have some lovely pictures and videos taken from the last day of school before the mid-term so I had to share them. Very sorry for the delay. Hope you enjoy!!!
For the Halloween parade the children learned two songs: one in English and one in Irish. Take a look at them practising them in the classroom before heading to the hall for the parade.
We were exploring the theme of autumn this month. We collected leaves from the school and local environment. The children used these leaves to print with autumn colours. We cut out the leaves and created an autumn tree.
Today we had a visit from a witch! She came to teach us how to make special potions.
First we add the powdered lizard!!! (baking soda)
Then we add some multi-coloured blood....creepy!!! (food colouring)
We then say our magic words and add the last secret ingredient! (vinegar) Watch what happens below!
Last week we created some Halloween art. We are exploring different colours and what they look like against a dark background, and it was lots of fun. Have a look at the firework displays below.
The fireworks displays were really simple to make all you need is black paper, coloured paint and match sticks to spread the paint out. If you like you can add a bit of glitter at the end for a bit of extra sparkle.
In our Aistear play sessions the children have been creating their own small world. They took turns in groups to paint the box and create items like trees that will go in it. Take a look at the process below.
Now that the small world is created they can start playing in it. They really enjoy playing with something that they created themselves.
This month we will be exploring the theme of Autumn. To begin exploring our theme we went on an Autumn walk around the grounds of the school. We discussed the different colours that we could see and collected leaves to bring back to the classroom. The children had so much fun.
We looked at the bird houses and the the bird feeders that are hung in different trees around the school grounds. We visited the insect hotel where you can see lots of different creepy crawlies. We looked at the sunflower heads that have been hung on the trees. When sunflowers have died the heads can be turned into a natural bird feeder.
