Stop The Bus Game
or (Boy Girl Fruit Flower for those who remember)
Hello everyone. Mrs Farrelly from Room 14 here.
I am going to explain and show you how to play a fun game that helps us practice our alphabet skills. It is called Stop The Bus.
So each player draws a grid with the headings that they are going to use. You can put in as few or as many headings as you like. These can include:
Boys name Girls name Fruit Flower Vegetable Animal Country School item Clothes
And at the end leave a column for the points for each round.
Here is an example of the grid when you start.

And at the end leave a column for the points for each round.

Now you are ready to play. One player says the alphabet inside their head. You can let the other players know you have started by saying "A" then continue saying the alphabet letters in your head until the next player tells you to STOP THE BUS!
Whatever letter you land on, all players have to think of a name for each category that begins with the letter you have landed on.
So for example if you land on letter M then you would write Martin for a boys name, Mary for a girls name, melon for a fruit, I can't think of a flower, mange tout for a vegetable, Morocco for a country, marker for a school item, monkey for an animal and mittens for clothes.
When you are done and maybe you can set a time limit everyone reveals their answers one by one. So everyone says the word they wrote down for the first category and you write down your scores.
The scoring is
as follows. You get 5 points for every answer that makes sense. You get 0 if you couldn't think of a word or your word doesn't make sense. But if you came up with an answer that no one else has then you get 10 points! Everyone adds up their scores and you move on to the next person saying the alphabet, landing on a letter and playing another round.
Watch this video of my children playing the game.

'Our Favourite Authors' with Ms. Fallon!
A big HELLO to all my friends from OLV! I hope you are all well at home. I have been missing our 'book talk' very much so I hope to post a few videos here to keep our usual study of our favourite authors and their books going. I hope you enjoy them.
Storytime with Ms Callan!
Hello boys and girls of OLV,
I hope you are well and enjoying the beautiful spring sunshine. It's soooooo long since I've seen you all and I am looking forward to seeing you again when the schools reopen. I made a video of myself reading one of my favourite stories. It is all about playing and it has a great tip for you to remember when you are playing! Look at the video to find out what that is....................

Tricky Word Revision
Here are some slideshows of the children's tricky words which have being covered in school this year. These are sight words that cannot be "sounded out"). The tricky words are divided into 5 groups getting progressively more challenging as you work from group 1 to 5 (from Junior Infants to 1st class).
Being familiar with these words, recognising them, reading them, and spotting them in books will help your child continue to progress their reading.
