Family Fun with Oliver Jeffers
We are all huge fans of the author Oliver Jeffers here in OLV. Here is a video made by the lovely Harvey family. In it Daniel, Michael and Thomas speak about the author, some of the themes of his books and let us know how to listen to some of his stories online. How wonderful!
Watch out for some of Oliver Jeffers' key messages about kindness in his books;
Be kind to our planet!
Be kind to ourselves!
Be kind to each other!
These are important messages for us all, especially at the moment. We are really proud of you boys! Well done!

Our corridors are beautifully decorated with Spring displays created by parents and children. Spring trails around the school grounds are taking place. We are learning about new growth in Spring. Junior Infants are preparing an array of art, musical and poetry delights for the annual junior Infant Spring Service which will take place on Monday.

Ms. Maguire’s class gave a really interesting podcast today- about synonyms. Well done to everyone.
They sang this short song:
Synonym Song
When I’m happy, I am glad,
When I’m naughty, I am bad,
If it’s large, it’s also big,
Another name for hog is pig!
See me hurry, see me rush,
To be quiet means to hush,
If I want, I also wish,
A plastic bowl is still a dish!
Synonyms, synonyms, synonyms, synonyms!
Parents can take the opportunity to practise synonyms at home, in stories or in conversation.
Thank you again Room 12 for the last three podcasts; they were so very interesting and stimulating. Ms. Bergin’s class will take to the air for the next four weeks and we look forward to hearing them!

OLV Podcast by First Class- Room 15
Another invigorating Podcast from 6 and 7 year olds in OLV Infants! Once again, the children have risen to the challenging task of addressing the pupils and teachers of the school over the intercom. Thank you to Ann, a parent, who spoke at the end of the podcast, showing gratitude to the teachers for their care and dedication over the years. Her Yeats quote is very touching:
‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire’
1st Classes of 2016, on this our 50th Anniversary, have much to say! In the month of November, they are debating and discussing opinions etc. Please encourage your child to share these experiences with you and you could also engage in a debate at home. Encourage the use of the following vocabulary:
• In my opinion
• From my point of view
• I agree (strongly)
• I disagree (strongly)
• I believe that………….because………..
• I feel that…………because……………..
• In addition, I believe/think/feel/argue
• Furthermore…
• In conclusion
A new tradition is evolving, with the weekly podcasts. It is refreshing and promising listening to the young generation expressing their opinions so articulately and confidently. In class lessons, they have also shared their opinions on the importance of listening to each other’s opinions and indeed the importance of having opinions. We look forward to two more weeks Podcast from Ms. Mc Carthy’s Class and then, Ms. O Shea’s class will follow.
