Message for the children

Picture
This week our learning theme is all about homes and building design. Did you know it's National Earth Day on Wednesday? We explored how architects build and design houses, especially eco-friendly houses that support sustainable earth for your child's future. Through playful learning, you can have great fun using your imagination and working with your grown-up to design and build homes of the future!

If I build a house by Chris Van Dusen

Watch the video story above. Talk with your grown-up about the different types of design elements of Jack imaginary house. Do you think you would like to live in a house like this? Why? What was your favourite room in Jacks house?

What would your future home look like? Here are some of the houses the girls and boys drew last year. The design process is an very important job done by an architect before any building starts. The architect's job is to be creative, but also to think of any problems that might arise when building a house!

Build Your House

Collect some recycled junk from any household rubbish and build your own house. If you have any building blocks or dollhouse furniture, you could design the inside as well as the outside of the house. How many rooms does your house have?

If your grown up says it's ok, why not try to build your own den in your bedroom or the sitting room? My children love to use blankets, pegs, sticks, old boxes and masking tape to build their fort. Don't forget you have to clean up everything afterwards!

Different types of Houses

There are many different homes in Ballymun.  Print out the sheet below or draw the different types of homes on a page and label them with the help of a grown up. What type of home do you live in? Point out the different types of homes you encounter on your walk today.

Eco Friendly Houses

Living in a 'green' home doesn't mean your house is painted green! It means that it's been built using materials that are safe for our planet. Today more and more people want to protect the earth's enviroment, and the great thing about being an architect is you can desig your own house and make sure you make it eco-friendly.  So lets find out about all the ways you can become a green architect!
Read the book below about Green Homes.

Once you have a better idea about how we can make our homes more eco friendly, draw your eco home and label the design features that make it unique! Or write a report about your house like the ones below. Here are a few examples!

I hope you find these tasks helpful and that the children enjoy completing them. We hope to have school emails set up this week and this will mean that we can communicate regulary while school is closed. I am here to support your child in their learning as much as I can, so please do send me photos of their work and I will give them feedback and encouragement. Have a lovely week,

Kind Regards,

Ms Murray

Super Chilled Little Workers!

We like to relax after all the fun and active learning in our room. Classical music is perfect to creating the right mood during our wind down time. We listen to calm and peaceful music all the time in rm 5!

A Squash and a Squeeze

This week we worked on this fun story to link in with our house topic. The children loved how the animals just kept piling into the lady's house but in the end she realised that she should have been happy with she had in the first place.
Below are a few pictures that the children drew about the story.

Art - Shadow Drawings

So we finished our shadow drawing art project today. The children traced over their pencil outlines using markers and then filled the siluette in using oil pastels. Finally we created a background landscape using a very watered down paint. I will post a picture of the finished work next week when they're dry and up on the display wall.

Aistear Building

We can't get enough of our building theme in Rm 5... the children just get more and more creative as we explore new building designs during Aistear.

As a Friday treat we took our Aistear outside while the sun was out. We hope to get a lot more outdoor work done over the last term so here's hoping the sun continues to shine!
