It's All The About Snow!

This weeks topic couldn't have been more fitting! The girls and boys in room 5 were learning all about snow... ask your child where snow comes from? or what is snow made from? We read lots of lovely stories about snow. This one was particularly special...
We moved like the twirling, swirling snowflakes in the story during our gymnastics lesson.

PE - Twirling Snowflakes from Ms Murray on Vimeo.

We learnt that Inuit people build houses out of snow... so we built one in our own class for play time.

Then teacher taught us how to draw an Igloo using curved lines and shadows... Scroll through the photos to see everyones great drawing!
Teacher tried to show us how to build an Igloo out of our white snow-doh... but we think it looks more like a string of sausages!

And just to create a really snow filled experience teacher even arranged for it to snow real snow for a day! We were the lucky ones who enjoyed our very own snow ball fight!

In other news...

GAA

The children really enjoyed their GAA with Gerry on Thursday. We are delightd to have it for the next 6 weeks, so please have the children wear their PE gear on Thursdays. Thank you.

Fantastic homework this week... Well done everyone!

Summer's Here!

As the beautiful summer weather continues what better time to learn about plants! The boys' school garden is in full bloom and the children were delighted to take a trip up to look at all the lovely plants and vegetables growing.
While we were exploring the garden we took a moment to discuss the different parts of the plant. We talked about the roots, steam, leaves and the flower head. We learnt about the job of the different parts.

P.E.

The children had a go at skipping this week. It's very tricky for the little ones but plenty of practice and they'll get there!

I hope everyone is enjoying the great weather!

Fun For All Day!

The highlight of this week has to be our fantastic Fun For All day! It was super fun and the weather was perfect! Here is a little mix of some of the different sport we were involved in!

Super Chilled Little Workers!

We like to relax after all the fun and active learning in our room. Classical music is perfect to creating the right mood during our wind down time. We listen to calm and peaceful music all the time in rm 5!

A Squash and a Squeeze

This week we worked on this fun story to link in with our house topic. The children loved how the animals just kept piling into the lady's house but in the end she realised that she should have been happy with she had in the first place.
Below are a few pictures that the children drew about the story.

Art - Shadow Drawings

So we finished our shadow drawing art project today. The children traced over their pencil outlines using markers and then filled the siluette in using oil pastels. Finally we created a background landscape using a very watered down paint. I will post a picture of the finished work next week when they're dry and up on the display wall.

Aistear Building

We can't get enough of our building theme in Rm 5... the children just get more and more creative as we explore new building designs during Aistear.

As a Friday treat we took our Aistear outside while the sun was out. We hope to get a lot more outdoor work done over the last term so here's hoping the sun continues to shine!

Happy Easter from Room 5!

Great fun was had by all at todays Easter egg hunt. Thank you to all the parents who got involved and made it special for all the children!

Maths

We had great fun playing our maths games... it was noted how good the children are at turn taking, something many children find challenging. Well done boys and girls! Maybe you can play some board games over the holidays with your family and show them how good you are!

PE

This week we worked on balance and team work. The children had to make it across the swamp without falling into the it and being eaten by the swamp creatures. We lost a few toes and legs along the way but most managed to make it across intact. Great fun and giggles all round!

Yoga

The children enjoy another Yoga session. They are really mastering some complex moves here! I was impressed...
If you fancy giving it a go yourself over the holidays you can click for CosmicYoga here!

Easter Art

We did some lovely Easter art this week... We used oil pastels to make these cute easter chick eggs. We explored how smudging the oil pastels allows us to blend different shades together to create a more colourful and vibrant picture.

Reading and Writing Progress

Picture
We didn't get as much DEAR time in as we would have liked this week but we'll get back on track after the hols. I'm sure you were all delighted with the writing copies that went home on Tuesday. The children have been working really hard. I try to encourage them to have their own notebooks at home and to write whenever the get the chance... lots of lists, letter, small notes, stories and even labelling their pictures will dramatically improve their spelling, reading and writing.

Homework

Great homework this week... hope you enjoyed the poem! Lots a lovely colouring in and some lovely easter eggs. It's really good to see the children take ownership of their homework, this will stand to them as they move up through school. As I say to the children, if they want to get good at something, they have to put in the work and plenty of practice.

That's it for this week... I'm going to clock off to enjoy my holidays! But before I do I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the parents for signing the yellow forms, I really appreciate your support! Have a great break... see you all back for the last term on the 24th!

Regards,
Ms Murray

As we continue to work on our writing, letter sounds and blending, please help your child by practicing with them at home. I have sent home their Word Box copies this week with a letter sound assessment on the inside page (I still have a few more assessments to do so there is a few who won't get them until next week). All children can start their blending and if they are unsure of any sounds support them by focusing on the specific letter/s when reading books, online games or the JP app. They are also working hard on their handwriting, I am delighted to hear that they are choosing to write for fun at home too. It is great to give your child their own little notebooks so that they can write in them for fun. Please make sure they are using the correct letter formation on their homework sheets, as shown on the page at the back of their Sounds Book. You will also find a list of tricky words at the back of their Sounds Book.

This is a fun song we are focusing on in class.

In maths we are working on visualising our sets of 5 in different ways (i.e. straight lines, circles, towers etc) Also we are learning our 3D shapes. Below is a song they love about 3 D shapes. You will also notice that 3D shapes feature a lot in our play this week (great for building!)
A fun little song we are doing in maths this week to help the children with time... very on topic i think!

Picture
The tasting part of the Food Dudes came to an end this week. The children really enjoyed it. I sent home a chart for the children to record their fruit and vegetable eating at home. When it's fill in they can bring it back into school and they get a certificate.

Aistear fun this week... the topic of transport now incorporates our 3D shapes and lots of building and design. The children decided they wanted to scrap the train and use the boxes for designing their own modes of transport. NEVER underestimated the value children get from cardboard boxes!

Enjoy the fun video below... I think you'll agree that the children are making great progress in their physical education!

Have a great weekend. And just to remind you that you are welcome to pop in at the start of a new aistear topic to see the new aistear areas with your child. I know they get very excited to share them with you!

Regards,

Ms Murray

This week the focus was on letter formation. We are working hard and the children are really showing steady progress.

The children always enjoy learning through song. Here we are practicing our irish.

We also did some more exploring weight. The children are becoming really familiar with the concept of weight and we had some interesting discussions how we should sort objects around the room into order according to their weight. Lightest to heaviest. We also learnt that bigger doesn't away mean heavier.

Some more fun discovering through reading! We spotted lots of letters that we recognised. Also the children are encouraged to start to blend their sounds to read words on their own. Reading has really become a time to share opinions and interests together as friends.

This week marked the end of the month's topics. We had great fun learning about Winter, clothes, the Artic and weight and lots else. But we're excited to move onto all things new too. Below are a selection of fun videos of the children playing. Enjoy!

Homework was excellent as always. Great to see the children working so hard on their numbers and adding interesting patterns to their colouring. Well done everyone!

To finish off this week's blog I am delighted to be able to show you a little video that really shows just how fantastic each and every child in my class is. I was extremely proud of how they managed to perform this PE exercise to such an excellent  standard. They do you proud moms and dads!

It was lovely to see all the moms and dads at the PTMs on Monday. I am glad to hear that your little ones are so happy in school. That's all any of us want for our children. Next month we will be moving onto the topic of 'Transport'... if anyone has any old toy cars, busses, boats, trains, airplanes etc I would greatly appreciate them to add to our play. That's it for this week. Have a great weekend.

Kind Regards,
Ms Murray
