The Garda Station

In October we visited the Garda Station in Ballymun. We had a great time. We walked up to the station with our teachers. We got to sit in a real Garda car and van. We met the guard dog and horses, we even got to try on their uniforms. Some of us even got handcuffed. We had a great day and even got a nice treat when leaving. Here are some pictures from the day.

September

The boys and girls have settled really well into school since September. They spent September getting to know each other, learning about the home and body parts. They have all come out of their shells and made new friends and have come a long way since their first day of school.

We spent the month of September settling into our new school environment, learning all about ourselves and getting to know each other. We spent September learning all about Little Red Riding Hood. By the end of the month, the children were very familiar with the story and they re-enacted a scene from the story of the Big Bad Wolf disguised as Grandma. As part of the literacy programme in Our Lady of Victories Infant School, junior infant classes receive thirty minutes per week of in-class team teaching. Ms. Brooks and Ms. Stanley come into our class every Monday afternoon and have been teaching us all about our body parts through poems, songs, stories and games. The children really enjoyed the poem that they taught us - check us out on the video below!

In Maths, we have been learning the days of the week, colours, the differences between day and night and ways in which we can sort materials by colour, shape and size. We learned a new song to help us to remember the days of the week - check out some videos below.

Each afternoon, the children engage in forty minutes of integrated learning through play (Aistear). During ‘Aistear’, the teacher provides rich environments where the children can explore, touch, manipulate and experiment with a variety of real life and diverse materials. Children ask questions, make predictions and develop their thinking. They learn together with others. The environment offers opportunities to actively explore, to work independently and with others, to make decisions and follow through on their ideas, to solve problems, to engage in real life activities and to experience co-operative, symbolic, dramatic or pretend play. A rota is set up at the start of each week so that each child spends one day at each station and therefore engages in each station by the end of the week. Stations tend to include role play, construction, small world, márla, sand, water and junk art. During September, the children engaged in activities based around the home. The theme for October has been the fire station whereby the children engage in fire station role plays, fire safety awareness and water stations. We also decorated and built our own Autumn-themed small world. Check out the photos below:

We learned so much about hedgehogs such as what they look like, what they eat and how and when they hibernate. We explored various Autumn leaves and used them to create our own hedgehogs:
