Lots more fabulous work sent in this week!
Hi everyone and happy Friday! I can't believe not only is it Friday again but also another bank holiday. It certainly won't feel like a bank holiday but we won't complain about having an extra day to ourselves in the sunshine!

Maths:
  1. Quick game idea from Ms. Brooks
  2. Start and stop eg. 3-7, 4-9 etc.
  3. Today we will cover the last 3D shape and that is a sphere. The easiest way to remember a sphere is to think of it as a ball. Have a look at the spheres I found.
  4. Revision of all 3D shapes (see video below)
  5. Busy At Maths page 13. Use your maths language ie. sphere, cube etc.
Picture
Picture
English:
  1. Practice reader online, tricky words, sounds, word lists (supplementary set posted on Monday's blog post)
  2. Dictation 1-8 (see video)
  3. Handwriting - as I said yesterday, I wanted to skip the pages in the handwriting book for p and r because we teach them differently, so try and practice them yourself today. I have made a template if parents would like to start this for your child. (see below)

Hi everyone, I hope you are all enjoying the nice weather - I saw a few pictures sent to me of children doing their work outside in their gardens, what a great idea!

English:
  1. Handwriting - the letter v on pages 22 & 23. I have skipped letters p and r in the books because they are not the formation we teach but I will go back on them again.
  2. Writing Workshop - Think, draw, colour, write. You might be able to so some labeling yourself at this sate and get some help for a sentence! Try the finger trick to help you make spaces.
Picture
Maths:
Did you find lots of cuboids yesterday? Well today's 3D shape is called a cylinder. It always reminds me of a pringles can! It has a round face and two flat faces that are in the shape of circles! Let's look at cylinders what I found...
  1. Now go on a hunt for your own cylinders. Make a word or picture list (or both) to record your findings! Again, parents try keep using the word cylinder eg. 'Oh great, you found another cylinder, how many cylinders do you have now? etc.
  2. Busy at Maths book pages 22 & 23. You might need to say your rhymes to help you with page 23 - I've linked both below to help you remember!

Hi everyone, I hope you are all having a good week and are enjoying the sunshine when you can.
https://www.olvinfants.com/skipping-school.html
Head on over to the new Skipping School section of our website (link above) and explore lots of fun with the skipping rope you received with your books! As you will see, Ms. McSweeney is a whizz!
English:
  1. Practice reader online, word lists (see supplementary set on Monday's blog post), tricky words etc.
  2. Sounds (see video)
  3. Dictation 1-8 (see same video)
  4. Handwriting - revision pages 16 and 17 of your book. Page 16 - You must trace over the purple lines as well as write the letters yourself. Colouring small pictures like on this page will help make your writing neater too! Page 17 - write the first letter - begin on the bottom blue line!
Picture
Picture
Maths:
  1. See Ms. Brooks' simple game below!
  2. Today's 3D Shape is similar to yesterday's cube, it is called a cuboid. A cuboid has faces that are rectangles, and are usually longer than cubes. Have a look at what I found in my house and see what you can find. (Parents: keep using the word cuboid eg. 'Oh great, you found another cuboid, how many cuboids do you have now? etc... Make another list!

Hi everyone, I hope you are enjoying having your books and copies back. I will try and refer to some pages in my lessons this week, while also keeping in mind that the weather is promised good for the week.

I am conscious that parents have paid a lot of money for these books so I do plan on trying to finish them. However, as I have said already to a couple of parents, you don't need to feel under pressure to complete everything either, especially if you are working from home or elsewhere. The books are for you to keep so you might choose to finish some bits you missed in your own time when the summer comes. Also, keep in mind that your children have been learning and working for  7-8 weeks without any books, so an empty page doesn't mean they haven't covered it. We would generally use books as a resource to refer to - they are not the curriculum! :)
Maths:
3-D Shapes
This is a new topic so you might bare this in mind while introducing the words to the children. There are four on the junior infant curriculum so I will do one each day for the rest of the week.
  1. Clap and snap counting practice - clap forwards and snap backwards
  2. CUBE - see intro video below. Find some cubes in your home and make a list by writing or drawing (or both) of what you find. Emphasise that cubes have square faces. Don't forget to send me your work, I would love to see what you find!
  3. Busy work - Maths Book pg. 20. Count, colour and write. (Only write the correct number!)
Picture
English:
  1. Practice reader online, word lists (supplementary set posted on yesterday's blog), tricky words, sounds etc.
  2. Handwriting - pg. 38 & 39 - the letter m. Up, down up around, down up around, and lead on.

Gaeilge:
Leabhar - lch. 35 (Book - g. 35)
Déan úsáid as teanga! (Use your language!)
- The yellow box at the bottom is the language we have done associated with this page. The lesson was done on the blog post from Thursday 14th May. Again, I am going to catch up on the pages to do with this topic, Teilifís before moving on.

Hello everyone and happy Friday! Well done to everyone for working hard this week. Here are some pictures sent in from this week. I will try to keep Friday my day for uploading so try and get them in to me before then if you'd like to see your pictures on the blog that week. If not I will just put them onto next week's blog :)
** Click in to the pictures to see in full**
I hope most of you were able to pick up your books yesterday. I would ask that you would not let the children race ahead and complete lots of pages at once, because I will be assigning specific pages from the blog, so try and stick to this.
English:
  1. Practice sounds, word lists, readers online, tricky words etc.
  2. Dictation 1-8 see below
  3. Handwriting - pg. 36 of your book, the letter n. If you did not get your book then I have some below for you to practice!
  4. Listen, watch and draw - Art hub for kids, see blow. Label your picture or write a sentence underneath. I picked a kite but there are hundreds for you to choose from!

  3. Leabhar - lch. 37 & 38. (Book - page 37 & 38)
  4. Amhráin (song)
Maths:
I left this until last because I thought it might be a fun way to end the week.
Estimate and measure yourself! You could also do parts of your body like arms and legs if you wish. Make it a family activity - everybody guess ________'s length when they lay on the floor, and then measure. The person with the closest guess could win a small prize? Don't forget to use non - standard units again such as crayons, pencils, Lego pieces, spoons etc. If you use a measuring tape and refer to centimeters the children will probably have no concept of this and the numbers are too high. Have FUN and have a lovely weekend everyone!

**Reminder** You can collect your child’s books and copies today from the school from 10-11am. You may collect for family/friends so as to cut down on people entering.

Hi everyone, I hope you all had fun yesterday on your at-home Sports Day. If you missed it, yesterday was meant to be our annual Fun for All Sports Day in OLV Infants so most of the content I posted was fun games/activities. You may wish to get involved at the weekend instead. Now, let's get back to the serious stuff!

English:
  1. Practice your sounds, word lists, tricky words, reader online etc.
  2. Handwriting - see below
  3. Word - Picture matching. Read each word carefully by blending and match to the correct picture.
  4. Writing Workshop
  • Mini Lesson (see video below)
  • Independent Writing - your turn, don't forget to think for a minute before you put your pencil on the paper!
  • Shared Session - share your work with someone in your family.
   5. Story - Maisy's Sports Day. This might be nice to watch after you finish all of your work today. See youtube below

Maths: Length
Estimation - introduce the skill of estimating/guessing the length of an object. Make a similar table to mine if you wish to record your guesses and actual measurements. Remember from Tuesday, we use non-standard units to measure, such as lego pieces, crayons like me, pencils, spoons or any set of things you have that are all the same length.
Try also to encourage the children to make accurate guesses eg. Do you think the TV will be longer or shorter than the fireplace? Ok so we know the fireplace was ___________ so is your guess going to be more or less than this? etc.
Explain also that just because your estimate and answer are not the same, it does not mean you were wrong.

Reminder: Junior Infant parents can collect their child's books and copies from the hall tomorrow Thursday 21st from 10-11am only. You may collect for a cousin/friend to cut down on number entering the building.

Today was meant to be our Fun for All Sports Day boys and girls, so I have decided to just post a little bit of work and lots of fun games we usually have on our Fun Day to play with your family if you wish. Enjoy!
Maths:
A nice little game from Ms. Brooks.
English:
  1. Practice your reader online, sounds, tricky words, word lists etc.
  2. Handwriting

The way we work our Fun for all day is by making stations. You could choose which games/activities you wish to do first, make a little schedule and set up the stations. We would normally do 15 mins at each station, but depending on how many you can and want to do you can choose how long you spend at each. Put a timer/buzzer on a phone to make it more fun! Here are some station ideas that we would include in school, of course you can add your own too:
  • Skipping
  • Hula hoops
  • Tennis rackets
  • Balls (rolling, throwing, bouncing, shooting etc.)
  • Egg and spoon race
  • Sack Race
  • Bean bag race (balancing on your head, you could use a bag of haribo or something like the shape of a beanbag)
  • Obstacle course - this could be a real challenge (and great learning) to try and make your own obstacle course maybe in your back garden if you have one!
  • Musical Statues
  • Musical Chairs
  • Golf
  • Bowling (this would be an easy one to make at home by using plastic bottles lined up like skittles and a ball to try and knock them down)
  • Hurdles - prop your kitchen brush onto different size boxes and try and do a leading run up and jump over, one leg first followed by the other!

Hi everybody, don't forget you could be in with a chance of wining a prize this week by simply leaving a comment on any of the blog posts from this week!
Also, tomorrow was meant to be a big day in our school, so I am going to be posting just a little work for you to do before lots of FUN! So if you're interested, tune in tomorrow to see what and why!
Maths:
  1. Forward backward counting 1-10/20 and 10-1 jumping, skipping, jumping jacks, strides, squats, marching up the stairs etc.
  2. Length: Write the answers to the following questions in your copy/page (see example) numbered 1-6.
  • Can you find something longer than a scarf?
  • Can you find something shorter than your bath tub?
  • Which do you think is longer, a spoon or the slide in our playground in OLV?
  • Which do you think is shorter, your arm or your television? Go check!
  • Find what is longer, your leg or your arm. Measure first and then write your answer.
  • Find what is shorter, your big toe or your baby finger. Check first and then write your answer.
3. Measuring - we will introduce the skill of measuring objects using non-standard units (crayons, pencils, lego, spoons etc. versus metres and centimenters, these are standard units.). See how I measured some things in my house below, and then try some yourself!
Picture
I’m using crayons to measure. Explain that we must start by putting the crayon at the very beginning of the object so as to make it fair, and also make the crayons touch too. This was just a little bit over the length of 5 crayons. You may round up or down, and if you think your child has an understanding of the word 'half' you could also introduce this.
Picture
The carpet on the step is exactly 4! Excuse me while I go find the hoover...
Picture
Can you count how many crayons long is my fire place?
Picture
This side of the coffee table is 4, I think my step was also 4. What does this mean?
Picture
English:
  1. Practice your reader online, sounds, word lists, tricky words etc.
  2. Handwriting (see below)
  3. Practice writing your name in cursive (I've uploaded the names again below)
  4. Writing Workshop: This week we will focus on setting. This means we will write about places- the beach, your house, the swimming pool, at the park etc.
  • Mini Lesson with teacher (see video below)
  • Independent writing (remember you can think of your own ideas here, you don't need to pick the same setting and words as me)
  • Shared Session with your family - tell them about your picture/writing.

Hello everyone and welcome back to another week of learning on the blog!
English:
  1. Pick a Big Cat new reader Collins Connect, word lists, tricky words etc.
  2. Sounds (see video below)
  3. Dictation 1-8 (see same video)
  4. Handwriting
  5. News - Write a title (explain that this is very importnant to try and put at the top of all of your work, that it tells people what you are going to draw/write about eg. the title of a book). Also write Today is Monday and label your picture if you can.

Maths:
  1. Practice your doubles orally eg. 2 and 2, 3 and 3 etc. up to 5.
  2. Length: Long and short. Be familiar with these words and try and explore and find things that are long and short. I've recorded my findings two different ways - by writing and drawing, or you might like to try both by lablelling your pictures! I also added things I could not see but I thought of them.
  3. Draw sets of items in twos. Make one long and one short. Colour the long things blue and the short things red. You could get you parent to draw something simple for you like I did.
  4. Game: Get someone in your family to find something long in your home, and you must find something even longer! You could also ask them to find something short, and you fin something even shorter!
